Length

We will begin working with length in Chapter 9 of math, measuring and comparing the length and height of objects around us. Students will measure using non-standard units (rather than inches or centimeters) such as crayons, paper clips or linking cubes.

Doubles and Doubles +1 Concentration

Today we practiced some new facts in a fun way--

...with a game!

Students played Concentration by matching doubles and doubles +1 facts.

You can play at home with a traditional set of cards---just remove the face cards.

Meteorologist Visit

Today the entire 1st grade had one last community helper come to visit -- WMUR's Kevin Skarupa! It was a perfect way to tie in community helpers with our new weather unit.

He talked to the students about the tools he uses to do his job, why he loves his job and taught them a bit about how clouds can help them predict the weather.

A Furry Community Helper

On Friday we had a great treat for the students and teachers alike---the Manchester K9 Unit came by to show the students how dogs are workers in our community.

The students were very well behaved, knowing that the dog would feed off their energy and needed calm, quiet students to be able to work.

The dog was able to find 3 pieces of "evidence" hidden around the playground,

and also did a demonstration to show how he would help catch someone who may be fleeing the police.

It was a great way for students to see another community helper. Many thanks to Mrs. Newcomb who made this visit possible!

Kind Comments project

Today the students took home a project to work on for Valentine's Day. Here's a peek at mine from a past year to see what it may turn out like once we exchange kind comments:
