Planting seeds

Yesterday (and today) we planted our seeds to watch as they sprout and grow. Some chose to plan sunflower seeds, while others chose pumpkin. Both are fairly fast to sprout and begin hoeing and the students are excited to see their seeds change and grow.

After planting the seeds, students began making observations in the plant journals. Some were disappointed that the seeds hadn't begin growing overnight!

We will keep you posted on the progress of our plants' growth!

Sink or Float?

Today we explored more with our solids. Just like scientists, we made and recorded predictions about our solids thinking about which would sink and which would float.

Then we got to experiment to see what they would actually do! The students took turns dropping them in the water. Some of our predictions were right, and some of the outcomes surprised us! A couple items floated at first, but then were knocked underwater (the spoon) or became waterlogged and sank (the pipe cleaner).

Outdoor observations

Today we began our science unit in living things. After reading about what a living thing is (it grows and changes, needs air, water, food and usually sunlight, and it has a life cycle) we went out to observe and record living and non-living things.

Planting seeds

This week we read a story called 'How a Seed Grows'. Each student planted either sunflower or pumpkin seeds and we will be observing their growth over the next few weeks. During the planting process students took over as photographers. Take a look at the process!
