All in a Row

Today in Math, the students were introduced to a new game to practice counting, comparing and ordering numbers from 1-10, called 'All in a Row.' We played this game with Ten Grid cards, but you can play at home with a standard deck of cards--just remove the face cards to order numbers 1-9.

If you are interested in seeing how our math games are played, check out the 'Math Games' tab at the top of the blog. There are directions for each game and videos where I have students from a past class demonstrate how to play the game.

The students loved playing this game, and did a great job placing their number cards in order and quickly noticed which numbers they needed to win!

Stories of 5

At calendar this month we have been working on the number 5 and learning the many ways to make 5. A few days each week we wrote stories about ways to make 5. Today the students worked together to illustrate these stories, making sure all of the information was included. Working with a partner and in a group required the students to plan, take turns and cooperate to get a finished product everyone could be proud of.

This 'Story of 5' book will be on display along with other class books during our Open House on Thursday October 2nd!

Indoor recess

With today's wet weather we had our first indoor recess. There are many choices for indoor recess and everyone found something fun to do that they enjoyed.

Puzzles were very popular

Clip Chart

Everyone has been working hard and clipping up throughout the day. This picture was from yesterday when two students even clipped off the chart and onto my lanyard, a feat that earns a gem for your clip.  Enjoy the weekend, next week will be another full week of learning!

Ten Frames

Today in math the students were introduced to 2 tools we will use often this year: Ten frames and linking cubes. We used the cubes to represent numbers to 10 and show the number in different ways. For example, we showed the number 5 as 5 and 0:

1 and 4:

And also as 3 and 2:

See how many different ways you can build a number together!
