Indoor Recess

Due to the cold temperatures we had indoor recess again today. At the beginning of the year all of our indoor recess options were introduced as centers so the students could practice working cooperatively within each activity. They are able to walk right in no matter who the duty teacher is and know just what to do. Everyone is very responsible about picking things up when they change activities or when recess ends. Here are a few pictures from today's recess including drawing, building with blocks and cubes, cards, cars, and magnetix. Their imaginations are endless!

Happy Holidays!!

We had a wonderfully energetic first day of winter/last day of school in 2012!!! After some morning work and a reading of The Polar Express in the classroom the first grade teachers surprised the students by making gingerbread houses in the multi-purpose room. (The students could sit where they wanted so spread out among 100+ first graders i did my best to snap a picture of everyone) We hope you enjoyed these edible creations!
In the afternoon we had a whole school assembly where the first grade sang a gingerbread song they learned with Ms. Latham in music.
It was a wonderful end to 2012 in school and I hope your holidays and celebrations were healthy and happy as well!

Gingerbread houses in Art

Our week didn't get off to a normal start with a delay due to snow. However, the class was treated to an extra Art class with Mrs. White Monday morning to work on their 3-D gingerbread houses. I'm sure you love the finished products they brought home!

Ordinal numbers and positional words

We began a new chapter in math on ordinal numbers and positional words. Today we began talking about left, right, between, before and after. You can reinforce these concepts and vocabulary at home, along with ordinal numbers (first through tenth) in everyday situations. Here are a few pictures of the students explaining where objects on their desk are in relation to each other.
